The box, 3 inbounding. The defense has seen the cross-screen layup twice tonight. Why that matters: this play only exists because of what the defense now expects.
On the handoff, 5 steps across and cross-screens X4 exactly as in the layup play. Why run the real screen once more: the counter needs the defense to show its adjustment, and it only shows it against the screen it adjusted to.
4 cuts low off the screen and the adjustment shows: X5 steps up early to show on the cutter and X4 cheats over the top of 5's screen. The entry to 4 is gone. The read is X5 leaving the rim. Why the defense shows early: it is the standard answer to a cross screen, and it leaves nobody behind it.
2 pops to the wing and 1 to the top, the safety spots, and the offense resets rather than force it. Why the safety: a counter run on a hunch is a turnover; it is run after the defense has shown the adjustment.
3 inbounds to 2 on the wing, the safety. Why the pass goes to the safety: the first option was taken away, and a forced pass into a show is the turnover the show was for.
2 passes back out to 3, who has stepped in to the corner, and the box resets with 3 taking the ball out of bounds again after the stop on the other end. Why reset here: the play is a pair, and the second half is run from the same first picture.
2 gives the ball to 3 in the corner and the other four return to the box. Why the box is rebuilt exactly: the counter has to look like the play the defense adjusted to.
3 takes the ball out of bounds under the basket and the box is set, with X5 already leaning high and X4 cheating over the top before the ball is handed over. Why the defense is early: it is guarding the play it saw.
The counter: 5 steps up as if to cross-screen, plants, and cuts straight back to the ball on the ball-side block while 2 and 1 run their normal pops. X5 has stepped up to show on a cutter who is not coming. Why the fake screen: X5 left the rim to help on the cross screen, and the screener is now behind him.
4 fakes his cut off the screen and back-cuts along the baseline to the rim behind X4, who went over the top of a screen that was never set. Why both cutters: the inbounder has two layups to choose from, and the defense has two defenders standing where the play used to be.
3 inbounds low to 5 on the block, the first look, and 5 lays it in. Why the low pass first: it is the shorter pass, and X5 is above 5 with his back to the ball.
5 scores. Score. Why the pair is taught together: the screen-the-screener play makes the defense show early, and this play is what showing early costs.
