Drill: Dribble Moves at the Cone into a Layup
line, token
defender at
the arc
1
2
1 attacks from the half-court sideline with the right hand straight at the token defender at the top of the arc, at game speed, because the move only works if the approach makes the defender believe he is being driven on.
At the defender's reach, not ten feet early, 1 makes the called move, a low crossover to the left hand, and gets his shoulder past the dummy, so the defender is behind him instead of beside him.
One hard dribble out of the move to change pace; the point is that a move without acceleration after it lets the defender recover, and the change of speed is what the drill is really grading.
1 gathers off the left foot and takes the ball up on the left side, outside-inside footwork, because the finishing hand matches the side of the drive and keeps the ball away from the help.
Left-hand layup off the glass; then he rebounds his own shot, dribbles to the far corner, makes a move at each sideline cone on the way back up, and joins the other line, because both hands have to get the same reps.
