Man-to-man: X4 plays side by side on the inbounder and X1 gives 1 the first step toward the sideline, because the run and jump wants a speed dribble up the side, never the middle; it concedes the catch to get the dribble.
4 inbounds to 1. X1 pressures from the inside shoulder, forcing the dribble up the sideline, and every helper gets above the ball so the middle is sealed; X2 is one pass away and already looking at the dribbler, not his man.
1 speed-dribbles up the sideline with his head down: that is the read the jumper waits for, because a dribbler who can't see the jump can't pass over it. X1 chases and cuts him toward the line; 4 steps in behind the ball.
X2 leaves 2 and jumps the dribbler head-on with high hands, yelling the switch, because 1 is committed to the sideline; this is the sideline trap, the only time two defenders stay on the ball. X3 slides into 2's lane and X5 stays side by side with 5.
1 picks up the dribble under the trap and throws the retreat pass to 4, which the press concedes, because the count is at six and a backward pass is its win; nobody fouls a player who has already lost his dribble.
Sprint out of the trap: X1 turns and runs to 2, the man X2 left, X2 stays with 1, X3 goes back to 3, and X4 pressures 4 from the inside, so everyone is matched up again; the press is a hard switch, which is why nobody is open for long.
Counter: the offense reverses to 3 on the weak side, their most controlled handler, and tells him to keep the ball in the middle, because a dribbler who never turns his back and never takes the sideline gives the jumper nothing.
3 dribbles to the middle under control; the press answers the counter with a jump switch there: X1, above the ball on the right, runs at 3, and X3 jump-switches to 2 the instant X1 arrives, because the run and jump never traps the middle, it switches it.
3 picks up his dribble against the second jump and lobs ahead to 5; X5 has stayed side by side and above him the whole way, so he steps into the lane and steals it: turnover, and the press runs out the other way.
